The Ordinary Little Playroom
We’re moving! And what is my first thought before we even officially chose our next apartment? Where is Rin’s playroom going to be. The playroom has undergone many phases, and I can’t help dreaming of her next playroom space as her needs are ever-changing with her age. Moving is just such an opportunity to release my creativity once again. So come with me on a little “tour” of everything in my daughter’s playroom.

How the room functions for our family is of course the most important, and to put it plainly, things just need to make sense. Our playroom musts: to have a designated reading space, a sensory table for coloring and learning activities, and a tidy place for all of her toys. It should be fun, meaning the space itself looks fun and invites her to play (but yes, I am “that mom” who hates overly bold and bright colors and obnoxious looking toys). And that’s where form comes in. As an artist, I value having a beautiful home that my family loves to live in, and that guests love to spend time in. So when putting together a room, I try to visualize everything together and make sure that every detail feels intentional, purposeful, and well…pretty.
Fast forward to present day, and things are finally in place. Here is everything we used in Rin’s precious little playroom.

I love love love this blush bohemian rug from Well Woven. Its beautiful design naturally hides stains from dirty hands or toddler clumsiness well, and it’s versatile enough to have looked beautiful in all renditions of my daughter’s playrooms and bedrooms.
We were so blessed to receive this Beright Activity Table as a Birthday gift for Rin, and I am PUMPED. Water tables, edible sand, playdough, gardening, themed sensory bins…the possibilities are endless. It’s gorgeous, sturdy, super functional, and this particular one comes with 3 bins. *Update: We’ve had this table for over a year now and everything has held up exceptionally well *except* for the table top. The top is made of particle board, so you can’t expect durability against 7 kids who use it once a week when we host small group. I still love this table, and if you are just slightly crafty, you can easily recreate a more study table top with some thin mdf and a table saw.
I am normally very cheap when it comes to spending money on furniture and things for the home, but since we already had a long list of projects on our to-do list, I bit the bullet and bought the stools from Beright. No regrets whatsoever. They’re stylish and modern, they match the table, and -in my opinion- they’re worth the $20 a pop.
These floating book shelves are so versatile and simple that they can be used in any room of the house. I am not normally a fan of what I call “open storage” but a darling little display shelf like this is meant for beautiful things to be displayed on them. A big win when you get both form and function.
Rin’s favorite activity is reading, so naturally we have acquired a lot of books. We got our bookshelf for $60 on FB marketplace, but I’ve linked a similar house-shaped bookcase for you here.
I originally bought these gorgeous wildflower curtains to go in her “wildflower fields and foxes” nursery. Obviously, they were vital in completing the “wildflower” part of the theme. These curtains are suprisingly versatile and have been moved from apartment to apartment, and room to room with us and have now landed in her playroom.
Rin was gifted a Deer sweet seat for her first birthday, but at the time of writing this, the deer chair is no longer available. The Soft Landing brand still has a few of their animal seats in stock including the ivory unicorn, pink unicorn, and blue whale. My daughter Rin loves this seat! It is super light-weight so she can tote it around and put it where she pleases, but firm enough to sit in. This seat even has side pockets for books as an extra little bonus. *Update: it also looks like they have an upgraded version of their original seat that folds out into a lounger, with more animal options!
Now about the play kitchen…
I actually found our play kitchen for free on the side of the road in AMAZING condition. (I literally snagged it while the dude was still writing on the cardboard sign. God’s timing is perfect!) By no means is this one of the most “unnattractive” kitchens I’ve seen, but me being me, I have a vision for this kitchen to make it a little less ordinary (olive green doors, wooden handles, antique brass knobs and “fixtures”, marbled counters, and gorgeous pink tile backsplash to give you a little taste of my future plans). For those of you who have not the patience, skill, or time for projects, this neutral play kitchen from Tiny Land and this modern kids kitchen are super stunning.
All the kitchen accessories
Bare with me here, as there are *many* kitchen accessories Rin got from friends and family this past Christmas. A lot of items were thrifted, but I’ll do my best to find similar items for those interested. I highly recommend thrifting whatever items make sense for you. I’d rather support charities over big businesses, and I’d rather have a play kitchen that is unique to my daughter. Plus, I’ll take any excuse to go thrift shopping.
I love the muted tones of this neutral silicone tea set
This darling wooden tea party set gets played with a lot, and I’m pleasantly surprised with how well it has held up under aggressive play.
This is one of the cutest play kitchen dish sets out there!
I am obsessed with this mini coffee maker. I really like this one because the slot and little coffee discs are perfect for practicing her fine motor skills. Rin makes coffee in the morning while Mommy makes her own! *Update: the cups are no longer since we have some rough boys playing in her playroom once a week, so I’ve linked another great play kitchen coffee maker!
Rin was gifted this apron and chef’s hat set last Christmas, and being completely honest, the hat felt cheaply made to me and did not fit Rin. But I loved the apron so much that I would buy this set again because it’s so affordable. *Update: I’ve since made Rin another apron, and you can bet your booty that aprons will be coming to the Ordinary Little Finds shop in the future!
I’ve also made two chef’s hats that I hope will soon be added to the Ordinary Little Finds shop.
All the felt fruit, veggies, and donuts are handmade as well.
Having a toddler that loves to cook in her kitchen, this wooden pot and pan set sees a lot of hardy use. Only after a year did one of the pot handles come off, but it only requires a new screw and a bit of glue. I 10/10 still recommend.
I am loving our little playroom, and most importantly, Rin is too! I hope this inspires you to create the playroom of your child’s dreams. Let me know what y’all think in the comments below and share your family’s favorites!
